Marcasite and pyrite are dimorphs. It is almost impossible for the amateur collector to distinguish between massive examples of these two species. When crystalized, marcasite is more readily differentiated visually from pyrite.

MARCASITE  Palermo Mine, Groton, NH
1.2 mm rhombic crystal
Species:           MARCASITE
Locality:         Palermo Mine, Groton, NH
Specimen Size: 1.2 mm rhombic crystal
Field Collected: From tub of rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore.
Catalog No.: u2467
Notes: A visual identification. The true color is a bit more metallic bronze. To me, the growth structure on the bottom suggests marcasite. I don't think that this is a coated siderite xl.
